Occupational Therapy Pathway

Occupational Therapy Process of Assessment, Evaluation, Treatment and Discharge/Follow-up at Life-OT Ltd

Initial Appointment

This is a 90 min OT appointment in order to complete the initial Assessment process.

This includes the completion of The REAL Assessment (functional age assessment), clinical observations, Sensory Assessment according to age of child/young person and parents/carers feedback, as well as young person's interests, hobbies and habits that help us form an idea about the person's Occupational identity and Occupational Performance.

The Occupational Therapist may need to contact school to gain more information if necessary.

OT report with results and recommendations within 4 weeks of questionnaires being sent as completed to the OT service.

Evaluation & Care Planning

A 30 min complimentary meeting with parents is booked to discuss the results of the OT Assessment and agree the Therapeutic Goals.

Please note: Parents do not need to wait for the full report in order to start a therapeutic intervention with OT. The OT will bring a summary letter with the goals for agreement and discussion. After goals are agreed, it is expected that the child/young person will commence treatment with OT according to their needs.

This treatment may include:

  • Handwriting strategies
  • Gross motor and fine motor skills strategies (Balancing, Manipulating objects, jumping, pushing and pulling, hand strengthening strategies, throwing and catching)
  • Organisation, planning, memory, prioritisation skills and strategies
  • Communication and social skills strategies, following instructions, listening skills
  • School attendance skills
  • Feeding skills / self-care skills
  • Parenting skills strategies (how to deal with challenging behaviour at home and in the community/school)
  • Sensory Processing Strategies

Completion & Follow-Up

We recommend a period of at least 6–8 weeks as a minimum for OT Interventions.

Once this period is completed the OT will discuss with the parents the progress of the therapeutic intervention.

Once the child/young person no longer needs OT intervention, this will be mutually agreed and intervention will be finalised. OT Reviews can then be booked 6-monthly or yearly.

A summary of the OT Care plan and future recommendations will be provided upon discharge.
